Eli Lilly and Company is growing at a scale that changes the career conversation. Revenue rose from $34.124 billion in 2023 to $65.179 billion in 2025, and the company reported $22.974 billion of revenue in the second quarter of 2026. In August, Lilly raised full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $85-$87 billion. [S001, S003]
The expansion is physical as well as financial. Lilly has announced more than $50 billion of U.S. manufacturing commitments since 2020. In May 2026, it added $4.5 billion across Indiana sites. On September 21, two days before this research date, Lilly broke ground on a $6.5 billion Houston manufacturing facility expected to create more than 600 high-wage jobs. [S023, S024, S025]
Those numbers can make a career opportunity look self-explanatory. It is still necessary to determine what the proposed job will actually own.
Follow the business that funds the role
Lilly's current financial strength provides meaningful context. In the first six months of 2026, the company generated $16.023 billion of operating cash flow and spent $5.259 billion on property and equipment. It also paid heavily for acquisitions and carried $54.9 billion of total debt at June 30, up $12.4 billion from year-end 2025. [S002]
The business also has concentration risk. Mounjaro and Zepbound represented 56% of 2025 revenue and 65% of first-half 2026 revenue. That concentration does not make a specific job unstable. It does make the product, capacity, payer and competitive assumptions behind a role worth understanding. [S001, S002]
Ask what created the vacancy. Is it tied to a new site, a product launch, an acquisition, a replacement, or continuing operations? Which approved budget funds it? What happens to the role after the next major milestone?
A clear answer connects Lilly's enterprise momentum to the actual position.
Manufacturing expansion can create unusually broad roles
The manufacturing build-out is one of the strongest employment signals in the research. Lilly's current U.S. plans span active pharmaceutical ingredients, injectable medicines, devices and genetic medicines. Houston's new facility will use machine learning, AI, digitally integrated systems and advanced data analytics, according to Lilly. [S023, S024, S025]
The job descriptions show what that expansion can mean in practice. A current Houston associate-director role is expected to help build the organization, staffing, systems, business processes and culture of a greenfield site as it moves toward GMP operations. A Richmond industrial-hygiene role supports a new manufacturing facility and must carry a cell phone because the position supports 24/7 operations. A Concord microbiology role uses a regular weekday schedule but requires occasional shift work and off-shift response. [S101, S106, S107]
These can be valuable assignments for professionals who want startup, quality, operational-readiness and cross-functional leadership experience. They can also be demanding. The useful interview questions concern resources: Which systems are already live? How many positions remain open? What work is covered after hours? Who has authority when schedule, quality and staffing priorities conflict?
Remote does not describe the whole working week
Lilly's general recruitment guidance says roles classified as flexible combine onsite and offsite work, with the majority of time expected onsite. Individual positions can differ substantially. [S016]
A current Centessa associate project-manager role is advertised as 100% remote with less than 10% travel. Lilly's current senior legal-director role is also remote. The Centessa Southeast medical-liaison position is remote and field based, yet expects 60-70% travel and occasional weekends. [S102, S105, S110]
The label therefore needs to be translated into a real week. Confirm assigned office, onsite cadence, territory, travel frequency, time-zone coverage, on-call responsibilities and who controls exceptions. If the arrangement is important to the decision, put it in writing.
Acquisition boundaries add another layer. Lilly completed the Centessa acquisition in 2026, and several Centessa roles now appear on Lilly Careers while retaining Centessa-specific operating language. The public record does not establish that every Lilly and Centessa employment policy has already been harmonized. [S003, S102-S103]
Compensation ranges are useful only when the boundaries stay attached
Current official postings provide concrete U.S. base-pay examples. The Richmond industrial hygienist lists $65,250-$169,400. The Indianapolis community-engagement associate director lists $132,000-$193,600. The Houston manufacturing associate director lists $123,000-$180,400. A Boston or Indianapolis computational-biology role lists $166,500-$266,200. The remote senior legal-director role lists $199,500-$321,200. [S101, S104, S105, S107, S109]
Those are advertised annual base ranges. They are not average pay, accepted offers or total compensation. Lilly says actual compensation depends on education, experience, skills and geography.
Many current full-time-equivalent postings also state eligibility for a company bonus based partly on company and individual performance. Lilly's U.S. benefits page describes bonus/incentive and stock programs. The public sources reviewed here do not establish the target bonus, grant size, vesting schedule or historical payout for a specific sampled role. [S012, S101-S107]
An offer comparison should therefore separate base pay, annual incentive and equity. Ask for first-year proration, payout timing, performance measures and forfeiture rules.
The U.S. benefits package deserves precise eligibility questions
Lilly's U.S. benefits summary effective January 1, 2026 lists a pension after five years of service, up to a 6% 401(k) company match, and $10,000 in annual education and tuition assistance. Its life-benefits summary lists 3-6 weeks of vacation based on service, up to 19 paid holiday and shutdown days, and substantial parental-leave provisions. [S012, S013]
The same pages say employees may not be eligible for every program and that formal plan documents govern. That matters for different classifications and acquired companies.
Before accepting, obtain the current benefits summary for the legal employer on the offer. Confirm the pension service rule, 401(k) eligibility, leave effective dates, health coverage and any acquisition-related differences.
Learning is visible. Access during the real workload still matters.
Lilly reports substantial learning activity. In 2025, employees averaged 85 total training hours across company learning platforms, with about 82 hours focused on technical and compliance topics and 3 on development learning. Lilly also launched a private AI coaching platform available to all employees. More than 13,900 employees viewed development content. [S015]
The company also operates programs including the R&D Talent Development Academy, graduate pathways, internships and the Visiting Scientist Fellowship. The current Visiting Scientist page provides an unusually specific 2026 selection calendar for the 2027-2028 cohort. [S018-S021]
Program availability does not answer whether the target team protects time to use it. Ask which programs employees in the group actually use, how learning objectives connect to assignments, and how the manager evaluates readiness for larger scope.
AI is already part of the work
Lilly's AI story reaches beyond a technology pilot. The company describes LillyPod, powered by NVIDIA infrastructure, as part of a broader scientific AI capability. Its San Francisco plans include a Lilly-NVIDIA co-innovation lab. The Houston manufacturing site is designed to embed AI and advanced analytics, and current computational-biology work explicitly calls for AI/ML methods in target discovery. [S025, S026, S027, S109]
For a candidate, the useful questions concern tasks and accountability. Which work is already AI-assisted? What data may be entered? Who validates output? How are models governed in regulated workflows? How does increased productivity affect expectations for volume, speed or staffing?
The public evidence does not support a numerical job-replacement probability or a conclusion that workforce changes are caused by AI. It does support the conclusion that AI fluency is becoming relevant across science, manufacturing and professional work.
Culture and management still require team-level diligence
Lilly's 2025 engagement survey reported a 78% response rate. Among respondents, 95% said their work contributes to Lilly's purpose, 88% rated leaders highly for communicating physical-safety expectations, and 84% said teams effectively overcome barriers. Lilly also reported 9% total turnover, up from 7% in 2024. [S010]
Current employee-review pages contain both favorable and unfavorable accounts. Recent contributors describe strong compensation, science, learning and supportive teams. Others describe heavy workload, unrealistic pressure, bureaucracy or uneven management. These accounts are self-selected and their employment histories were not independently verified. They demonstrate variation, rather than a company-wide prevalence rate. [S029, S030]
The best response is to investigate the prospective manager. Ask how priorities are reset when the team is overloaded, how feedback is delivered, what happens when another function blocks progress and how disputed evaluations are reviewed.
Lilly also publishes ethics-reporting and no-retaliation systems. A historical employment matter should remain in scope: in 2023 the EEOC announced a $2.4 million settlement resolving a nationwide age-discrimination lawsuit concerning an earlier sales-hiring initiative. The settlement included equitable relief; this article does not characterize it as a trial liability finding. [S011, S031, S032]
Judge the opportunity by the work you will be able to prove
Lilly's growth can create meaningful career experience in greenfield manufacturing, clinical development, computational biology, regulated technology, medical affairs, legal policy and cross-functional governance. The future value of that experience depends on what the role lets a professional own.
A useful closing question is simple: after one year, what should I be able to deliver independently?
Then make the answer concrete. What decisions will I control? What resources will I have? What evidence will show that I succeeded? Which skills will I develop that remain valuable outside this exact team?
Those answers turn a large company story into a usable career decision.
Research method and limitations
This article derives from a 25-factor public-source investigation using SEC filings, official Lilly investor/careers/sustainability materials, government records, independent reporting and limited employee-review evidence. Ten detailed U.S. official job pages were inspected as a non-statistical sample. Active-at-check refers only to the state observed on September 23, 2026. The sample is not Lilly's complete vacancy inventory and does not establish a hiring trend. Employee-review accounts are attributed experiences, not representative workforce findings. No employee interviews, applications, publication actions or Link integration occurred during the research assignment.
