WHAT IS CAREER MOBILITY?

More than changing jobs.

Career mobility is the capacity to carry professional value into a different role, function, industry, organization, location, compensation path, or level of responsibility. It is broader than whether you can find one open job.

The Career Mobility Index separates capacity—your portable capability, evidence, positioning, access, and flexibility—from Constraint Load—the credential, authorization, location, compensation, or seniority conditions that narrow feasibility.

A person can be capability-rich and constraint-bound. That distinction is more useful than hiding everything inside one score.

WHAT AFFECTS CAREER MOBILITY?

Eight transparent lenses—one currently unknown.

The implemented method uses the approved capacity dimensions below. Market breadth and demand is not guessed when no dated external source is attached.
01

Transferable capability and evidence

How clearly demonstrated capability travels beyond its original context.

22% design weight
02

Role and function adjacency

How credibly current work maps to adjacent roles or functions.

15% design weight
03

Industry portability

How much value can be translated beyond one sector context.

12% design weight
04

External legibility and narrative coherence

How consistently a move can be understood outside the current context.

12% design weight
05

Opportunity access and network reach

How readily relevant people and decision pathways can be reached.

11% design weight
06

Market breadth and demand

Dated external evidence of the breadth and demand for relevant work.

14% · unknown in this release
07

Geographic and work-model flexibility

The range of realistic markets and work arrangements available.

7% design weight
08

Compensation and seniority choice capacity

The range of workable tradeoffs around pay, title, and scope.

7% design weight

HOW CAREER MOBILITY IS CALCULATED

A directional score with visible uncertainty.

Method CMI-3.0.0 · Updated 2026-08-22
01

Score capacity dimensions

Required self-report items map deterministically to 0, 25, 50, 75, or 100 within each applicable dimension.

02

Apply approved weights

Dimension scores are combined using the published design weights. Missing optional dimensions are excluded and weights are renormalized.

03

Keep constraints separate

Credential 30%, work authorization 25%, location/work model 15%, compensation 15%, and seniority 15% form Constraint Load.

04

Interpret the matrix

Capacity and Constraint Load produce Broad mobility, Capability-rich/constraint-bound, Focused mobility, or Build/resolve first.

CAREER MOBILITY VS. JOB HOPPING

Movement capacity is not movement frequency.

JOB HOPPING

Describes how often someone has changed roles or employers. It does not explain what transferred, why the moves were credible, or what options exist next.

CAREER MOBILITY

Examines the professional evidence, adjacency, access, flexibility, and constraints supporting more than one possible direction. A nonlinear career can still be coherent and portable.

HOW TO IMPROVE CAREER MOBILITY

Build options before you need them.

01

Translate capability

Describe the problem, action, scope, and outcome without depending on internal language.

02

Strengthen visible evidence

Create one portable proof point for each capability you want another market to recognize.

03

Map adjacent work

Name roles and functions that share the work you already perform—not only similar titles.

04

Expand access

Build real relationships beyond your immediate employer before a time-sensitive search begins.

05

Resolve binding constraints

Verify credentials, authorization, location, pay, and title requirements before discarding or pursuing a route.

06

Improve positioning

Align your résumé, profile, and career narrative so portable value is easy to recognize.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Know the limits before acting.

What does a Career Mobility Index score mean?

The score summarizes directional mobility capacity from the evidence and choices you report. Its fixed classification band is not a percentile, prediction, or comparison with a population.

Does a high score mean I can get any job?

No. Broad mobility means several movement types may be supportable. Specific employers, roles, credentials, work authorization, competition, timing, and market conditions still determine feasibility.

Why is Constraint Load separate from the main score?

Capability and feasibility are different constructs. A person can have portable capability and still face a binding credential, location, authorization, compensation, or seniority constraint. Hiding that barrier inside one average would make the result harder to interpret.

Why is market demand marked unknown?

This release does not attach a dated occupational or labor-market dataset to the calculation. MyTopMatch does not substitute an unsupported opinion for observed market evidence.

Is career mobility the same as job hopping?

No. Job hopping describes a pattern of employer or role changes. Career mobility describes the capacity and constraints supporting movement across roles, functions, industries, organizations, locations, compensation pathways, and seniority.

Do I need an account?

No account is required to receive the primary score, classification, Constraint Load, and core interpretation. A free account saves the result and unlocks the complete dimension analysis, Passport proposals, and Career Agent context.

Can employers or search engines see my result?

No. The landing page and methodology content are public, but responses and results are fetched privately and are never rendered into crawlable public HTML. Saved results remain subject to MyTopMatch access, export, and deletion controls.
